How to Change the Alarm Sound on an iPhone

Choose a wake-up tone in the iPhone Clock app, using sounds that are noticeable without being harsh.

Open the Clock app

The iPhone alarm lives in the Clock app. Open it, tap the Alarm tab, and select an existing alarm or create a new one.

Inside the alarm editor, tap Sound to open the tone list. Here you can pick a built-in tone or select a song from your library.

The wake-up tone you choose applies only to that alarm, so you can give a morning alarm and a nap timer different sounds.

Tone and volume considerations

A good wake-up alarm should be audible quickly. Tones with a slow or very quiet intro can be easy to sleep through.

iPhone alarms play through the speaker at the alarm volume even when the phone is on silent, but an extremely loud tone can feel stressful first thing in the morning.

Use the alarm's volume setting if your phone model offers it, and test the tone at the volume you will actually use.

About custom MP3 files

The Clock app's tone list accepts built-in sounds and library songs. A downloaded MP3 is not listed until it is added to your music library.

Ringoza does not currently produce the iPhone-specific ringtone format, so for a plain MP3 you would need to import it into Apple Music on the device or via a computer.

If that workflow is too involved, the built-in alarm tones already cover most wake-up needs.

Frequently asked questions

Will my iPhone alarm ring in silent mode?

Yes. Clock app alarms normally sound even when the phone is set to silent, unless the alarm volume itself is off.

Can I use an MP3 as an iPhone alarm?

Only after the MP3 is added to your music library. The Clock app sound list does not read MP3 files directly.
